Faculty: Please plan on having your final exam dates in available to students as soon as possible and inform your students when the finals date is available to request. Please note: space is extremely limited during finals and is likely to reach capacity before the deadline. Please make alternative plans for your students with 1.5x extended time and Distraction Reduced Environment accommodations.

Students: Confirm with your instructors if the Student Testing Center is needed. by Sunday, Nov. 15.

Why We Kept the Name Disability Services

In 2019 and 2023, Disability Services invited our student with disabilities community to help guide an important question: Should we change our name to remove the word “disability”?

We heard from students through a survey to ensure any decision reflected the voices of the people we serve.

What we learned:

5,930 students with disabilities were invited to participate. When asked if the word “disability” should be removed:

said no changes should be made

supported removing the word

13%

shared other ideas

11%

preferred a name change that still included “disability”

Overall:

65%

support keeping the current name

35%

prefer some type of change

Our decision

Based on the feedback we received, a majority of respondents supported keeping the name of Disability Services.

As a result, we will not change our name at this time.

Why the name matters

For many in our community, the word disability is:

  • A clear description of services and eligibility
  • An identity many people claim with pride
  • A term that improves visibility and searchability for support
  • Aligned with legal language and accommodation processes

Removing the word could create confusion or make it harder for students to find the support they need.

Moving forward

While the name remains the same, our commitment continues to evolve. We are focused on:

  • Reducing stigma
  • Promoting belonging and inclusion
  • Improving access and processes
  • Listening to student voices
