Faculty Support: Small Funding Requests
You must have JavaScript enabled to use this form.
Please use this portal to request departmental support for small funding needs of under 2K. If your requested funding needs are meant to benefit the department as a whole, please contact Ethan directly, instead of using this portal. As of January 2026, the Linguistics Department has set aside funds for five faculty spending pools: (1) technology, equipment, or furniture related to teaching and research, (2) conference attendance (if other internal funding sources have been exhausted), (3) student researchers on faculty research projects, (4) small events involving students and faculty, or (5) skilled assistance for PhD advisees completing the dissertation. Faculty may submit multiple small funding applications over the course of an academic year. However, funding decisions depend on overall AY funding available and may also consider the extent and type of previous funding received.
Name
Email Address
You can only apply for one of the first 3 funds if you have depleted your balance in your research and $XQK (A&S faculty discretionary fund). Do you have funds remaining in those 2 accounts?
Which of the following faculty funding pools are relevant to your small funding request?
Ìý
Technology, equipment, and furniture fund
This fund may be used to purchase technology, computer-related equipment, or office/laboratory furniture necessary for research and/or teaching purposes.
Ìý
Conference attendance fund
This fund may be used for attending conferences when all other means of support have been exhausted, including, for example, Dean’s Fund for Excellence.
Ìý
Student researcher fund
This fund may be used to hire student researchers on a stipend or hourly basis to work on a clearly defined research project. The department recommends a pay scale between $17-$25 per hour, depending on the position and skill level. As of July 1, 2025, 16.82 per hour is the minimum wage at Â鶹´«Ã½ for student assistances.
Ìý
Small event fund
This fund may be used in support of small laboratory or classroom events involving students to purchase food and drink. Faculty may also request an honorarium of up to $100 to bring in an invited speaker to the event through zoom, so long as the event is open to the broader department population. Larger events, such as bringing an invited speaker to campus, must be coordinated with the Department Chair and the Ling Circle Committee.
Ìý
Dissertation completion skilled assistance fund
This fund may be requested by PhD advisors to secure editorial, statistical, transcription, or other forms of skilled assistance support for PhD students in the final two years of completing their dissertation.

Description of Project and Request Detail
Your project description should be no more than 250 wordsÌýand include a statement regarding why the departmentÌýand relevant participantsÌýwould be benefitted by supporting this request. ÌýAlso include any information relevant to the request that will help theÌýdepartment in their evaluation, such asÌýthe reason for the request, time period or date of the event relevant to the request, target audience, participants involved, and/or any other fundingÌýsources pursued. If requesting a refund for food and drink at a small event (under 10 persons), you must provide the full names of all participants. If requesting funds for food and drink at a larger event (over 10 persons), you must provide the number of attendees along with their relationship to the university (how many faculty, how many students, how many staff, etc.).
Will you require procurement assistance from the department?
