Why Do We Celebrate First-Generation Celebration Week?

National First-Generation College Celebration Day takes place each year on Nov. 8, marking the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, this law expanded access to higher education through federal financial aid and programs that help students attend and complete college. These include Federal TRIO programs, which support first-generation students and students from limited-income backgrounds in accessing higher education, staying enrolled and earning their degrees.Ìý

The national celebration began in 2017 to recognize the achievements and contributions of first-generation college students. Today, colleges and universities across the country participate in events and activities that celebrate their first-gen communities.Ìý

At Â鶹´«Ã½, approximately 15% of students identified as first-generation during the 2025–26 academic year. First-generation Buffs bring unique perspectives, experiences and strengths that enrich our campus community.Ìý

We extend the celebration throughout the week to create more opportunities for students, faculty, staff and alumni to connect, share their experiences and celebrate first-generation achievements. It's also a chance to recognize the contributions of first-gen Buffs and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their success throughout their college experience.Ìý

Stay Connected with the First-Gen Community

The celebration continues throughout the year! FGSE offers programs, events and opportunities to help first-generation Buffs build connections, explore their interests and reach their goals.Ìý
